The Worker's Sleep and the Rich Man's Insomnia

There exists a concept of "scattered thoughts" (pizzur ha-nefesh). When a person's assets are spread across different cities, banks, and enterprises, their soul ceases to belong to themselves. They are constantly "scattered" among their possessions, worrying about each one. While an ordinary worker sleeps peacefully, excess property robs the rich of sleep and the ability to focus on anything truly important.

Spiritual Asceticism

The sources tell of sages who deliberately chose simplicity to free their minds for dialogue with the Creator. Solitude or lack of family was in some cases viewed not as tragedy, but as liberation from the burden of responsibility that prevents the soul from "flying upward," like a flame. Freedom is not the ability to buy everything, but the absence of the need to worry about anything other than one's mission.
