The Commandment of the Second Chance

The 14th of Iyar is the day of Pesach Sheni (the Second Pesach). In the era of the Temple, those who were unable to bring the Paschal offering on 14 Nissan — due to ritual impurity, a distant journey, or other circumstances — were given a unique opportunity to do so exactly one month later, on 14 Iyar. This is the only commandment in the Torah for which a "second attempt" exists.

The Rebbe's Teaching: "It Is Never Too Late"

The Seventh Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, repeatedly emphasized the profound spiritual meaning of Pesach Sheni. The Rebbe taught: "Pesach Sheni means that it is never too late. Everything can be fixed." This principle extends far beyond the specific commandment of the Paschal offering. It speaks to the fact that in every person's life, there is always an opportunity to start anew — regardless of what mistakes were made in the past.

Spiritual Meaning for Everyone

Even one who was "impure" — that is, distant from holiness and spirituality — and even one who was "on a distant journey" — that is, who had consciously distanced themselves from God and His commandments — receives the opportunity to return and fulfill their mission. God rejects no one and always leaves the door open. In our times, it is customary to eat matzah on Pesach Sheni as a reminder of this eternal message of hope.
