We live in a world where it is customary to thank the doctor for healing and medicine for relieving pain. But the sources pose an uncomfortable question: aren't you thanking the hammer for driving the nail?

The Doctor as Decoration

The sources state: consulting a doctor is necessary — the Torah gave the doctor permission to heal. However, it is a sin to believe that the doctor or medicine heals on its own. The example is given of the prophet Elisha, who threw salt into poisonous water, and it became drinkable. Does salt purify poison? No — this is Divine action clothed in the form of a natural process. Likewise, medicine is merely the "salt" that the Creator uses as a visible instrument of His healing.

The Etiquette of a Free Person

How then should we relate to those who help us? The sources teach: thank the person for their goodwill and efforts, but your heart must remain free from dependence. Gratitude is a manifestation of good manners, but not an acknowledgment of causation. You thank the waiter who brought the dish, but you understand that the food was prepared by the chef, and the money for it you earned yourself — more precisely, received from the One Who determined your portion.
