The Trap of the "Evil Inclination"
Depression is not merely a bad mood — it is a strategic weapon of the yetzer hara (evil inclination). Its goal is to make a person drop their hands and stop fulfilling their mission in this world. When a person sinks into melancholy, they lose precious time that could be used for good deeds and spiritual growth. Self-digging and endless analysis of one's shortcomings is precisely the trap the evil inclination wants to drive us into. While a person is occupied with regrets, they are paralyzed and incapable of action.
The Cure Is in Action
"The main thing is action," the Torah teaches. One small good deed, one mitzvah has infinite value before G-d and can completely change a person's inner state. There is no need to wait for inspiration to come or for sadness to disappear — one simply needs to start doing. Light a candle, give tzedakah, say a kind word. Each such action breaks through the wall of melancholy and lets in light. The Rebbe repeatedly emphasized: even the smallest effort in serving G-d outweighs years of inaction.
Shifting the Focus
Melancholy is born from excessive focus on oneself. The fastest path out of a personal crisis is to switch your attention to other people. Helping another person — whether through a kind word, practical support, or simply a sincere smile — instantly breaks the vicious cycle of self-absorption. Depression is never a justification for inaction — on the contrary, it is precisely in moments of darkness that maximum effort is required of us. The one who helps others discovers that their own darkness dissipates on its own.
