Hilchos Yichud (Part 1) In this week’s parsha we have the pasuk which says: “If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son, or your daughter, or the wife of your lap, or your friend that is as your own soul, entice you secretly, saying: ‘Let us go and serve other gods,’ which you have not known, neither you nor your fathers.” (Devorim 13:7): Chazal (Kiddushin 80b) derive from the above pasuk a remez [hint] to the prohibition of yichud [seclusion]: “Rabbi Yochanan said in the name of Rabbi Yishmoel: ‘From where is there a hint to the Torah to [the prohibition of] yichud? I have many coins, but I do not have a money changer to give them to: I have many questions, but after your death, I have no one who can answer them.” Tosfos asks: How could it be that Rabbi Akiva was striking his flesh until blood flowed, in clear violation of the verse in Kedoshim (Vayikra 19:28), which is repeated in our parsha?
