R’ Asher warned R’ Nachman that he would be severely punished for skipping work, and he might even be thrown into a pit for a few days where it was possible to die from hunger! He approached R’ Asher and after getting confirmation that R’ Asher wouldn’t work on Shabbos, R’ Nachman told him that he also wants to stop working on Shabbos. At roll call, R’ Nachman’s absence was duly noted by the guards, and a messenger was sent to bring him to the natchalnik (commander) who would decide his fate. During his time in the labor camp, R’ Nachman began keeping Torah and Mitzvos (as much as was possible in such conditions) as his Pintileh Yid came out. When the messenger arrived and asked for Rozman, R’ Asher immediately remembered a famous story he had once heard, about two Bochurim during the war. However, R’ Asher knew the trick wouldn’t work a second time, so the following week he told R’ Nachman to hide and maybe they wouldn’t find him.
