The beginning of Parashas Bamidbar states: ‫ וַ י ְדַ בֵּר ה' אֶל־משֶׁה‬And HaShem spoke to Moshe ‫ בְּ מִדְ בַּר סִינַי‬in the desert of Sinai ‫ בְּאֹהֶל מֹועֵד‬in the Tent of Meeting…[2] The last pasuk in Parshas of Naso relates how HaShem communicated with Moshe Rabbeinu: ‫וּבְב ֹא מֹשֶׁה אֶל־אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד לְדַ בֵּר אִתּוֹ‬ When Moshe would come into the Tent of Meeting to speak with Him ‫וַ יִּשְׁ מַע אֶת־הַקּוֹל מִדַּ בֵּר אֵ לָיו‬ and he would hear the voice speaking to him ‫מֵ עַל הַ כַּפּ ֶֹרת אֲ שֶׁר עַל־אֲר ֹן הָ עֵדֻ ת‬ from above the covering on the Ark of Testimony ‫מִ בֵּין שְׁ נֵי הַ כְּרֻ בִים‬ from between the two cherubim ‫וַ י ְדַ בֵּר אֵ לָיו‬ and He spoke to him.[3] Question: How do these two portions relate to the Yom Tov of Shavuos? On this theme of humility, the Talmud teaches: :‫( אֲ מַר לֵיּה‬Rava) said to him: ‫ אִם ָאדָ ם מֵ ׂשִים עַ צְמֹו ּכְ מִדְ ּבָר זֶה‬If a person makes himself humble like this wilderness ‫ ׁשֶ הַּכ ֹל ּדָ ׁשִין ּבֹו‬which is open to all and upon which everyone treads ‫ ּתֹורָ ה נִיּתְ נָה לֹו ּבְ מַּתָ נָה‬the Torah will be given to him as a gift[7] In the above phrase, we see that even after the revelation of Sinai, Moshe is gifted with the ability to continue to hear HaShem’s voice. As is well known, this ability of Moshe Rabbeinu to hear HaShem speak to him “‫ פֶּה אֶל־פֶּה‬- mouth to mouth”[8] was a result of his extreme humility, as it says in a few pesukim before: “:‫ וְ הָ אִישׁ משֶׁה עָ נָיו מְא ֹד מִכּ ֹל הָָאדָ ם אֲ שֶׁר עַל־פְּ נֵי הָ אֲדָ מָה‬- And the man Moshe was exceedingly humble, more so than any person on the face of the earth.”[9] So from this explanation above, we see the connection between the Torah portions of Bamidbar and Naso and Shavuos. This is best accomplished when there is the element of humility, thereby allowing us to earn the honored designation of a ‫ מְדַ בֵּר‬- a “speaking being.” Since the word ‫ י ַדְ בֵּר‬can also have the connotation of “leadership and guidance”,[12] may we merit that ‫ משֶׁה י ְדַ בֵּר‬- Moshe Rabbeinu will speak yet again, ‫ֹלהִים יַעֲ נֶנּוּ בְקֹול‬-ֱ‫ וְ הָ א‬- and HaShem will answer him with a
