This was the only sacrifice obligatory on all Jewish people, men, women, and children (who were old enough to be educated).3 In addition, it is only one of two positive mitzvot that incur a punishment if one does not observe them,4 the other one being the brit milah. Rabbi Elazer ben Azariah’s opinion is based on the verse9 which says “And eat the meat on this night - ‫בַּ לַּ יְ לָהַּהַּ זֶּה‬.” We find that the term “on this – ‫ ”הַּ זֶּה‬refers to midnight as the plague of the firstborn is also referred to as ‫( הַּ זֶּה‬see Exodus 12:12 – And I will pass through Egypt on this night – ‫)הַּ זֶּה‬, and it took place at midnight. Halacha The Rambam writes13 that the halacha follows the view of Rabbi Akiva that by Torah law one may eat the Pesach sacrifice until the morning but by Rabbinic law one must finish Moshiach would come immediately (HaTinok by Rabbi Avaraham Maimon HaLevi, page 225).
