Adapted from a sichah delivered on 7 Tishrei, 5717 (1956) Introduction T he Beis HaMikdash is not only a structure that once existed in Jerusalem, but an inner place that continues to exist in each one of our hearts.1 Based on that understanding, learning about the service that the Kohen Gadol would carry out on Yom Kippur not only teaches us about the practices that he observed years ago, but also provides us guidelines for our own Divine service on Yom Kippur – and, indeed, beyond that day. There were two aspects to the Kohen Gadol’s service on Yom Kippur. He would carry out his service in the courtyard of the Beis HaMikdash and the Heichal (its outer sanctuary) while wearing his golden garments. However, he would perform his service in the Holy of Holies while wearing white garments. We must have both golden and white garments in our service of G-d.
