As the Rambam puts it: The mitzvah of giving the half-shekel entails giving half of the coin that ‫ַמ ֲח ִצ ית ַה ֶּׁש ֶק ל זֹו ִמ ְצ ָו ָת ּה ֶׁש ִּי ֵּת ן ַמ ֲח ִצ ית‬ is [common] currency1 at the time in question, even if that coin is larger ‫ַמ ְט ֵּב ַע ׁש ל אֹו תֹו ַה ְּז ַמ ן ֲא ִפ ּל ו ָה ָי ה אֹו תֹו‬ than the shekel used for the sanctuary. ‫ַמ ְט ֵּב ַע ָּג דֹו ל ִמ ֶּׁש ֶק ל ַה ֹּקֶד ׁש‬ (Mishneh Torah, Laws of Shekalim, 1:5) )‫ה‬:‫ א‬,‫ הלכות שקלים‬,‫(משנה תורה‬ This is in contradistinction to the principle requiring wholeness and completeness when it comes to anything sacred, especially in the Beis HaMikdash. As the Talmud states: Shmuel says: Service vessels sanctify (items) only (when the vessels are) ‫ ְּכ ֵל י ָׁש ֵר ת – ֵא ין ְמ ַק ְּד ִׁש ין‬:‫ָא ַמ ר ְׁש מ ּו ֵא ל‬ whole; they sanctify only full (measures, i.e., when they contain a ‫ ֵא ין ְמ ַק ְּד ִׁש ין ֶא ָּל א ְמ ֵל ִא ין‬,‫א ָּל א ְׁש ֵל יִמ ין‬ measurement fit for offering) (Zevachim, 88a) )‫א‬:‫(זבחים פח‬ The same principle applies to all sacrifices, as well as to the Kohanim themselves. The half-Shekel was intended to stir this consciousness within us: Rabbi Shimon said, the union of male and female is called “one”, ‫ ִז ּו ּו ָג א ִּד ְד ַכ ר ְו נ ּו ְק ָּב א ִא ְק ֵר י‬,‫ְּד ָא ַמ ר ַר ב י ִׁש ְמ עֹו ן‬ the Holy One, blessed be He, being called “one” only in the ‫ ַמ אי‬.‫ ֶא ָח ד ִא ְק ֵר י‬,‫ ַּב ֲא ַת ר ְּד נ ּו ְק ָּב א ַׁש ְר ָי א‬.‫ֶא ָח ד‬ place where the Female also is, since the male without the female ,‫ ְּב ִג ין ִּד ְד ַכ ר ְּב ָל א נ ּו ְק ָּב א ְּפ ַל ג ּג ּו ָפ א ִא ְק ֵר י‬.‫ַט ֲע ָמ א‬ is called half the body, and half is not one.
