B"H ספורי THE POOR חסידים WATCHMAN As told in the sefer Reshimos Dvarim: R’ Avraham Landa A’H, a chassid of the Tzemach Tzedek, was a businessman who decided to switch careers when his business failed, and so he began searching for a position as a rov instead. However, after the young watchman came to me with his request, I immediately changed my mind and I will accept the position as the rov of the city.” This poor, young man was R’ Shmuel Gronem Esterman A’H, the famous mashpia in Tomchei Tmimim in Lubavitch. R’ Avraham called the leaders of the community back and said, “After speaking to the people of the city, I had decided that there was nothing I could offer to them and I was going to leave without accepting the position as the rov of the city. When R’ Avraham arrived in Zhembin to interview for the position, he created a bit of a stir when he announced to his welcoming party, “Typically a rov is tested by the members of the community to see if he is fitting for the position. I am going to test the city and see if they need me to be their rov!” Bemused but willing, the town leaders announced that all the Jews in the community, young and old, should come by to speak with R’ Avraham. Being that he assumed a rov would certainly have the answers he was looking for, he wanted to become the rov’s helper so he could be nearby at all times, ready for the rov to give them to him! The man told R’ Avraham that he had learned Likutei Torah and Imrei Binah in depth, and knew them both by heart; but he had a few questions on some of the topics discussed there. It was suggested to him that he become the rov in Zhembin, a position he accepted, and he soon came to be called R’ Avraham Zhembiner by chassidim. One of the last townspeople to pass by the prospective rov was a poor, young man who worked as a garden watchman (an old-time security guard). R’ Shmuel credited all he learned and his chassidishe behaviors to R’ Avraham, and the time R’ Avraham spent learning with him.
