Now, it should be noted that if not for Rashi’s comment, one could have explained the distinction {between seeing Pinchas and an elephant}based on the continuation of the passage in theGemara:7 One who sees Huna ( )הּונָאin a dream, a miracle (nes, )נֵסwill be performed for him; [one who sees] Chanina ( )חֲנִ ינָא, Chananya ( )חֲ נַנְ יָא, [or] Yochanan ( )יֹוחָ נָן, miracles upon miracles (nisei nisim, )נִ סֵ י נִ סִ יםwill be performed for him. In tractateSanhedrin, the wording is “sixmiracles (nisim , )נִ סִ יםwere performed for him.” The Gemara here should seemingly have said, “a miracle (nes, )נֵסwill be performed for him.” Furthermore, even if one were to argue that the interpretation of the dream is also connected to the name “Pinchas” )פִּ ינְ חָ (סitself, the name {would seemingly point even more strongly to} nes ()נֵס, {since it} contains all the letters of that word. The Gemara states:1 One who sees Pinchas in a dream, a wonder (peleh) will be performed for him; one who sees an elephant (pil) in a dream, wonders (pelaos)2 will be performed for him; elephants (pilim), wondrous wonders (pilai pelaos) will be performed for him.” Rashi comments: A wonder will be performed for him— as was done for Pinchas, as stated in tractate Sanhedrin.3 The straightforward implication of the Gemara is that the difference between one who sees Pinchas and one who sees an elephant is that one who sees an elephant will experience many wonders, whereas one who sees Pinchas will experience only a single wonder. This is evident from the Gemara’s discussion 10 of whether the elephant was seen “saddled” (“with a saddle on its back” — Rashi) or “unsaddled.” Since the dream involves Pinchas himself, it stands to reason that the allusion relates to the events that occurred to him.] We are thus left with the original question: 8) Note that the letter nun (in Pinchas) can middle of the word Huna to the concept of a miracle interchange with the letter lamed (as they belong to (nes). Now, it is sometimes explained11 that the difference between the two terms nes and peleh is that a nes is something lofty and elevated, a
