Innkeeper Some say that zonah (in this context4) means an innkeeper or storekeeper as lazun means to feed.5 It has been suggested6 that “storekeeper” is a euphemism for a woman of the night.7 (Perhaps they worked as storekeepers during the day and would also maintain a nighttime business.) This interpretation would explain why the brothers refused to give Yiftach a portion of the inheritance (see below) as they claimed that he may not be the son of their father. (This was not the law of the Torah but was the custom of the Jewish people at the time).9 The term zonah is thus a euphemism which indicates that she married for love rather than the traditional way of marriage.10 2 Radak, first explanation 3 See Sanhedrin 21a. Even a bastard inherits from his father,11 so certainly the son of a concubine (or of a woman from another tribe) inherits.12 But Fearing that his brothers might kill him (to ensure he didn’t get his portion in the inheritance), 13 Yiftach moved away to the land of Tov where a band of idle people gathered around him. He therefore moved to the Diaspora as there is no obligation to make the pilgrimage to the Beit HaMikdash or Mishkan from the Diaspora.21 Rabbi Yonatan Eibeshitz also explains that the land of Israel is called Eretz Tovah22 as its energy reaches it through the moon which is feminine (and is compared to the Jewish people who receive from G-d just like the moon receives from the sun). This land of plenty afforded Yiftach and his men the opportunity to battle against surrounding nations (see below) without having to worry about their daily bread.24 ● Bad Co
