Shrugging his shoulders, the prisoner indifferently replied, “I suggest that you don’t start with him because in the end you will be made into a fool.” The next morning, at around 5:00 AM on Shmini Atzeres, the whole brigade headed out to work and the new brigadier made a point of telling R’ Asher to head out too. As he was finishing his Davening, a prisoner ran into the house, head beet red and sweat dripping everywhere, and huffed, “Come quick, it’s really bad.” R’ Asher had missed the noontime headcount the officers would do, to keep track of the 200 prisoners that were all working in that area, before dismissing the men to lunch. At least you can sing something for us while we work!” Overjoyed, R’ Asher immediately started singing the Hakafos Niggun and danced in a circle, praying that Hashem would accept his dancing and singing together with the dancing and singing of all Yidden, wherever they were. That night, as the prisoners gathered together to talk during their little free time, one of R’ Asher’s two prisoner-guards told the others, “That Jew can sing nicely, and since everyone had to wait for lunch for him today, maybe he should entertain them again with some singing.” R’ Asher happily responded that he will not only sing for them, but he will also dance! After the joyous singing and dancing finished, one of the prisoners quietly came over to R’ Asher and said, “You should know, in my entire life, I never experienced such joy as when you sang and danced for us!” R’ Asher would always finish telling this story by saying, “Only someone who was in a Russian labor camp; surrounded by these ruthless prisoners who could kill for even the smallest disturbance; stuck with the hungry prisoners who had to wait to eat because of a Jew’s Davening; together with the brigadier who could’ve been severely punished for allowing a Jew to not work, can really understand
