Ordinarily, Hallel must be recited during the day as the verse says9 ‫מִ מִ זְ ַרח שֶׁ מֶׁ ש עַ ד מְ בֹואֹו‬ ‫“ – מְ הֻ לָּל שֵׁ ם ה‬From the rising of the sun until it sets, we praise the name of G-d.” But on Pesach we recite it at night as the night itself has been transformed into “day.” This is the answer to the general question as to why is this night different than all other nights because it is not really a night at all. As such, there was an ancient custom to make the three matzot of the seder plate out of one issaron of flour (the volume of 43.2 eggs) as this was the volume of three of the above-mentioned loaves which accompanied the Todah offering.3 Thus the matzot are reminiscent of this offering. 4 (Nowadays, when it is customary to make very thin matzot, it is no longer practical to knead three matzot out of the volume of flour that is equivalent to 43.2 eggs.) The rest of this article will discuss several insights of the Sefat Emet on the Haggadah, from the Haggadah Sha’arei Sefat Emet by Rabbi Nachman Yosef Wilhelm (Jerusalem 1994) who culled them from the many teachings of the Sefat Emet5 on the Haggadah. Similarly, despite the fact that we were not fully prepared for the Sinai revelation as we had not completed the allotted time for the exile, G-d took us out early so that we could gather our strength and continue the “treatment” of the exile later on in our history.
