The actions of the chasidim of these tzaddikim, such as Rebbe Elimelech in his family lineage, and Rebbe Nachman and the Lubavitcher Rebbe in their courts, reveal the foundational principle of the Baal Shem Tov's teaching that the Kabbalistic notion of a tzimtzum, or contraction in God’s infinite revelation that preceded Creation and seemed to have left a void or empty space, in which reality could exist, is not to be taken literally. Rather, it means a geometrical side, as in “the side of the tabernacle” 2 or “the side of the altar.” “Back and Front You Created Me” Indeed, there is a lengthy discussion in the Talmud 3 in which all the discussants agree that the expression, “one of his sides” (‫ )אַ חַ ת מִ צַ ּ לְ עֹתָ יו‬means one of Adam’s sides, not one of his ribs. Similarly, because Eve was his unconscious “back,” she is experienced by him as a new being—the “back” (‫)אָ חוֹר‬, back, is perceived by the “front” as an “other” (‫)אַ חֵ ר‬, someone else (as reflected by our typical reaction to moments when our unconscious reveals itself like in a dream or a Freudian slips: “I thought that?!” “I said that?!”). Interestingly, the numerical sum of the three names “Elimelech, Nachman, and Menachem Mendel” (‫ )אֱ לִ ימֶ לֶ ךְ נַחְ מָ ן מְ נַחֵ ם מֶ ענְ דְּ ל‬is equal to the value of “Torah” (‫ )תּ וֹרָ ה‬as well as “run and return” (‫ )רָ צוֹא ו ָׁשוֹ ב‬and “acts of loving- kindness” (‫)גְּ מִ ילו ּת חֲ סָ דִ ים‬.
