The Ba’al HaTurim says: “We see from here, that one should guard Shabbos both before and after, the way to do this is by adding on to Shabbos both before and after.” Therefore, as well as this week’s topic being a timely topic, it also connects (slightly) to the parsha. ‫תורתו מגן לנו היא מאירת עינינו הוא ימליץ טוב בעדינו‬ ‫אדונינו בר יוחאי‬ Insights Into Halachah Early Ma’ariv As spring continues its inexorable march towards summer and the days become longer and longer, in many places it only starts to get dark extremely late into the day. Instead, the Mishnah (Berachos 26a) states that: ‫“ – תפילת הערב אין לה קבע‬The Ma’ariv prayer has no established time.” The same Mishnah records a dispute among tanna’im when the latest time to daven Mincha is (Berachos 26a): An anonymous tanna, whom the Gemara calls the Chachomim, permits davening Mincha “until evening,” whereas Rabbi Yehudah ends the time for Mincha at plag hamincha, notwithstanding that the day is not yet over. We are told: ‫תורתו מגן לנו‬ ‫“ – היא מאירת עינינו הוא ימליץ טוב בעדינו אדונינו בר יוחאי‬His Torah protects us, it enlightens our eyes, it advocates on our behalf for the good, our master son of Yochai”, therefore, it certainly seems like a worthy thing to be doing. ~8~ The question is, why did R’ Shimon bar Yochai need to run away, the Gemara in Shabbos (34a) relates that there was a certain person who disgraced the honor of R’ Shimon, and: ‫“ – יהב ביה רבי שמעון עיניו ועשה ממנו גל של עצמות‬R’ Shimon set his eyes on him and turned him into a heap of bones”. The Gemara in Shabbos (33b) relates: ‫יתבי רבי יהודה ורבי יוסי ורבי שמעון ויתיב יהודה בן גרים גבייהו פתח רבי יהודה ואמר כמה נאים מעשיהן‬ ‫של אומה זו תקנו שווקים תקנו גשרים תקנו מרחצאות רבי יוסי שתק נענה רבי שמעון בן יוחאי ואמר‬ ‫כל מה שתקנו לא תקנו אלא לצורך עצמן תקנו שווקין להושיב בהן זונות מרחצאות לעדן בהן עצמן‬ ‫גשרים ליטול מהן מכס הלך יהודה בן גרים וסיפר דבריהם ונשמעו למלכות אמרו יהודה שעילה יתעלה‬ .‫יוסי ששתק יגלה לציפורי שמעון שגינה יהרג‬ “R’ Yehudah, R’ Yose, and R’ Shimon were sitting together, and Yehudah ben Gerim was sitting
