Mar 9, 2023 ) Just Can’t Wait Statement: In Midrash[1] it says: ‫ָאמַר רַ ּבִי אֱ לִיעֶ זֶר‬ Rabbi Eleazar said, ‫ׁשְלׁשָה הֵן ׁשֶֹלא הִ מְּתִ ינּו ּבְ ׁשַ לְ וָתָ ן‬ "There were three who did not wait for their contentment ‫ׁשֵׁש ׁשָעֹות‬ even six hours ‫ וְ סִיסְרָ א‬,‫ וְ יִׂשְרָ אֵל‬,‫ ָאדָ ם‬:‫וְ אֵּלּו הֵן‬ and these are: Adam, Israel, and Sisra… ‫ ׁשֶ ּנֶאֱ מַר וַ ּי ְַרא הָ עָם ּכִי בׁשֵׁש מׁשֶה‬,‫וְ יִׂשְרָ אֵל‬ Israel, as it says: "And the nation saw that Moses delayed" ‫ּכִי בָאּו ׁשֵׁש ׁשָעֹות‬ (This hints) that when six hours had passed ‫וְֹלא בָא מׁשֶה‬ Moses had not appeared. In Pirkei Avos, at the age of 40, a person transitions from one level of intellect to the next level of Binah - understanding.[5] This is based on the fact that after Moshe Rabbeinu led the Jewish people for 40 years in the wilderness, he told them: “HaShem has not given you a ‫ לֵב לָדַ עַת‬- a heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, until this day.”[6] From here we see that it took the Jewish people 40 years before reaching a full level of understanding. Based on the above, one can suggest that the reason why the Jews refused to wait just 6 hours, was perhaps they felt that once the 40 days were over, the window of opportunity to achieve a state of completion and be fully connected to HaShem (through the Torah that Moshe would provide them), would have passed. The time when ‫נִתְ אַ ּוָה ׁשֶ ּיְהֵא‬ ‫ לֹו ּדִ ירָ ה ּבַּתַ חְּתֹונִים‬- HaShem’s desire to have this (world) below a dwelling place as above[7] will finally become realized and no more waiting will be needed...ever again. We don’t want to wait.” We can learn from the episode of the Golden Calf that when the time arrives for Moshiach to come, and the goal of creation will be realized, we will not be delayed an hour or even one moment. Isn’t it strange that the ‫ ּדֹור הַ ּמִדְ ּבָר ׁשֶ ּכֻּלֹו ּדֵ עָה‬- the “generation of the Midbar who were full of knowledge,”[2] would not have logically reasoned to wait just a little longer? Just a few examples are: The 40-day period required for purification after the birth of a male child.[3] Ritual purification through the immersion in a mikveh filled with 40 Se'ahs (a measure of water).
