The Possuk1 states: ‫שֹׁפְ טִ ים וְ שֹׁטְ ִרים תִ תֶּ ן־לְ ָך בְ כָל־שְ עָ ֶּריָך וגוֹ׳‬ “You shall set up judges and enforcement officers [see footnote] for yourself in all your cities etc and finishes2 with the words3: ‫“ ּובִ עַ ְרתָ הָ ָרע מִ קִ ְרבֶּ ָך‬you shall abolish evil from within you ….4 ‫ּובִ עַ ְרתָ הָ ָרע מִ יִ שְ ָראל‬: And you shall abolish evil from Yisroel”. All this corresponds [analogously] to that which our Chachomim of blessed memory expound5 on the words 1 Possuk: (16:18) ‫שֹׁ פְ טִ ים וְ שֹׁ טְ ִרים ִתתֶּ ן־לְ ָך‬ shall be first upon him to put him to ‫בְ כָל־שְ עָרֶּ יָך אֲשֶּ ר ה׳ אֱֹלקֶּ יָך נֹׁ תֵ ן לְ ָך לִ שְ בָ טֶּ יָך‬ death, and afterwards the hand of all ‫“ וְ שָ פְ טּו אֶּ ת־הָ עָם מִ שְ פַּט־צֶּ דֶּ ק‬You shall set the people, and you shall abolish evil up judges and law enforcement from among you” officials for yourself in all your gates 4 You shall abolish evil from amongst (cities) that HaShem, your G-d, is you: Just before Sheini the Possuk giving you, for your tribes, and they returns to talk about judges and says: shall judge the people with righteous ‫“ ּובִ עַּרְ תָ הָ ָרע מִ יִ שְ ָראֵ ל‬And you shall judgment”. “Judges and law-enforcement 5 Expound: The Talmud in Nedorim officials” ‫ שֹׁ פְ טִ ים‬are judges who (32B) relates: What is the meaning of decide the verdict, and ‫ שֹׁ טְ ִרים‬are that which is written (Koheles 9:14– those who chastise the people in 15): “There was a little city and few compliance with their order, or who men in it, and there came a great king strike and bind with rods an
