Just as a metzora (leper) is not impure until the Kohain pronounces him so, even if the fellow is learned and knows clearly it is an impure type of skin abnormality, a person attempting to become pure does not achieve cleanliness until he follows the exact ritual laid out in the Torah. “Why did you bring us from Egypt to die in the wilderness, for there is no bread and no water, and our souls are disgusted by this debilitating bread.” Rabbeinu Bachya asks, “But they had the manna (bread) coming down every day, and they had an abundance of water from the stone?!” Rather, he explains their complaint was something else. The fact that the manna was completely digested and used by the body, negating the need to excrete waste, was a miracle for the honor of the Jews, yet they turned it around and said they knew eventually it would harm them by logical standards. The Chizkuni (a Torah commentary) suggests that if the Torah had not written it this way, one might have thought that if he missed the sprinkling of the ashes of the Red Cow on the third day, he can do it twice on the seventh day.
