(R’ Frand) Never Hold a Grudge (The following has been adapted from the sefer “Beloved Companions” by Rav Yisroel Pesach Feinhandler, zt”l) In this week’s parsha we have the pasuk: ‫ לא תקם ולא תטר את בני עמך ואהבת לרעך כמוך‬- “You shall not take revenge, nor shall you retain animosity against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Vayikra 19:18). Although I normally like to discuss a topic related to the weekly parsha, this week, due to the large amount of mitzvos that are mentioned in this week’s parsha I was spoilt for choice, and couldn’t decide what to talk about, therefore, I decided that to make things easier we would discuss a timely issue instead. The way he starts his Teshuvah is as follows: ‫לדאבון לב ולמגינת נפש במלחמה זו היו כמה וכמה חללים שפתיל חייהם נקפד מירי מוטעה של‬ ‫ והחיילים שגרמו בשגגה מוחלטת למות חבריהם‬,‫חבריהם בין מהחיילים ובין מהחטופים‬ ‫ וממעמקים קוראים‬,‫שבורים ורצוצים עד דכדוכה של נפש על המכשלה שאינה אלקים לידם‬ .‫ ומה תשובתם ותיקון נפשם‬,‫ושואלים האם אשמים הם‬ 1 “With much distress, in the current war many soldiers have mixed up fellow soldiers and hostages with enemy soldiers, and soldiers have accidentally caused the life of both friendly soldiers and hostages to have been cut short due to stray fire. ‫השחתת העולם‬ ‫שיצטער עליה צער גלות ששקול כמעט כצער מיתה שנפרד האדם מאוהביו ומארץ מולדתו‬ ‫“ – ושוכן כל ימיו עם זרים‬The roots behind the mitzvah are, since the sin of murder is so great, as it involves the destruction of the world … therefore it is fitting, that if one killed even accidentally, since such a tragedy happened through him, it is fitting for him to be upset about it. However: ‫וכאשר הרים הברזל אשר עליה האבן אשר נותן אש והניחה עליה בא השטן בתוכה‬ ‫“ – ויצאה באש עם אבן הברזל אשר בתוכה ויצא אל העגלון הזה והמיתו‬when attempting to do so, the Sotan got involved and somehow the gun misfired and ended up killing the young driver”.
