Though normally Lot is called Avraham’s nephew, when Avram was told that Lot was captured, it says, “And Avram heard that his brother was captured, and he armed his household…” The Malbim points out that we see here how important family is. He was told, “Go for your benefit,” and “I will make you great and prosperous,” and “you will be a source of blessing.” There was nothing there about, “Do this because I said so.” Instead, Hashem focused on the benefit Avram would receive by listening to His words. We learn this, says R’ Chanan, from the fact that Sarah said, “I am angry with you,” and then the Torah later says, “And Avraham came to eulogize Sarah.” If a person wants someone to be punished, Hashem first looks to see if the plaintiff deserves any punishment. His answer was that the deeds of Man are greater, and brought as his proof a choice of eating a loaf of bread (Man’s work,) or some stalks of wheat (G-d’s work.) He explained that G-d leaves things in the world incomplete, allowing us to become His partners in creation. If we remember that everything that happens is to teach us a lesson, we will see that a person who harms us is merely a messenger of G-d, and bear them no ill will, especially since if we try to kill the messenger, it just may kill us first. Similarly, when Hashem made Avram the promise that he would have children, even though he was already past the age when most people had them, he made a conscious decision to believe it, knowing that there are some things we can’t see. Avram had been waiting most of his life for this moment, having come to the conclusion at the age of three that there must be a Creator, and having spent decades trying to convince others of the logic of his approach. R’ Akiva was asked whether the deeds of man or the deeds of G-d were superior, in an obvious attempt to make him say that G-d’s works were better, thus contradicting man’s involvement in performing bris mila. (They were right, but didn’t realize Avram was more a king than Pharaoh would ever be!)
