Parsha Halacha - Parshat Vayakhel/Shekalim - Shabbat Mevarchim Adar II No More Donations When the Donations for the Mishkan Stopped and Why Sponsored by Aaron Elbogen le'iluy nishmas his father, Yeshayohu ben Aharon, Yahrtzeit 6 Adar Parsha Halacha is underwritten by a grant from Dr. As the verse says,1 “Moshe had this proclamation made throughout the camp: ‘Let no man or woman make further effort [‫ ] אַ ל יַעֲׂשּו עֹוד מְ לָאכָה‬toward gifts for the Sanctuary!’ So, the people stopped bringing.” The commentaries wonder why Moshe didn’t accept the extra donations and instruct that they be used for the upkeep of the Mishkan. This explanation is derived from the fact that the word ‫[ ּוַיַ עֲבִ ירו‬And they made an announcement] is similar to the word used regarding Yom Kippur (‫“ – וְהַ ַֽ עֲבַ ְרתָ ׁשֹופַ ר תְ רּועָ ה‬You should make a Shofar blast heard”7), which is also a day on which work is forbidden. The Talmud says that this verse is the source for the prohibition of carrying on Shabbat.11 4 As the verse (36:7) says: ‫" – וְהֹותַֽ ר‬And there was extra.” See Ohr HaChaim on verse 7 5 The extra donations (brought before the announcement) were used for the Bedek haBayit (Ramban).
