At the beginning of the portion, on the verse,1 “all of them were men of distinction,” Rashi explains: “At that hour, they wererighteous.” However, further on, regarding the verse, 2 “And Moshe called Hoshea the son of Nun, Yehoshua,” Rashi explains: “He prayed on [Yehoshua’s] behalf, ‘May -Gd save you from the counsel of the spies.’” 3 This implies that even then, Moshe already sensed the wickedness of the spies. This 4 is stated explicitly in Rashi’s later commentary on the verse, “They went, and they came to Moshe” — “Just as their coming was with evil counsel, so too their going was with evil counsel.” In resolving the contradiction posed by Rashi’s commentary on the verse “They 5 went, and they came,” the commentaries have already explained that this is precisely what Rashi meant to infer earlier with the words, “ At that hour , they were righteous.” {The implication is that} they were righteous exclusively at the specific hour when they were selected and appointed— “to exclude the time following that hour.”6 Once they set out on their journey 7 (“They went”), they transformed and became wicked. However, the evil inclination sparked within them , and they returned to Moshe so he would give them signs in the land “whether it is good or bad,” and “if the people are strong 11 or weak,” and “if the cities are fortified.” Moshe sensed that their intent was evil, for why should they investigate more than they were commanded? … Therefore, it is written … ‘And Moshe called [Hoshea the son of Nun,] Yehoshua.’; when he sensed their evil inclination, he prayed for Yehoshua.” However, this explanation requires further analysis: a) It is highly implausible to say that Rashi’s intent in stating “At that hour , they were righteous” refers to an incredibly brief period of time, 12 from the moment of their appointment until they “returned to Moshe so he would give them signs in the land.”13 [At a simple reading, it appears that there was no delay whatsoever 14 8) In Sifsei Chachamim here: “For the Almighty had Moshe.
