Impressed, a smile spread on the face of the natchalnik as he said to the officer that was with him, “From the day that I came to this camp I never met a prisoner like this, who cares so much for the Russian Government's money!” As soon as the natchalnik left the non-Jewish prisoner was willing to help R’ Nachman build his Sukkah. R’ Asher didn’t bother enumerating the dangers of such a mission and just nodded, because he already knew that when R’ Nachman decided to do a Mitzvah there was nothing and no one that would stop him, even if the cost of doing it might be his life. ‫לע"נ הרה"ת ר' יוסף יצחק ב"ר אשר ז"ל‬ B"H ‫ספורי‬ NACHMAN ROZMAN'S SUKKAH ‫חסידים‬ Before every Yom Tov R’ Asher would explain to R’ Nachman the full background and story of the Yom Tov, and how it is meant to be celebrated. In a calm and serious voice R’ Nachman explained that since the rainy season was going to start soon, all the wood that was spread out outside would get ruined, so he took some initiative to build a storage hut to avoid that. Until the age of fourteen R’ Nachman had lived a religious life with his parents, but when his father passed away he drifted away and went into business, becoming a proud member of the Communist Party. There were 3,000 prisoners in the camp, most of whom were non-Jewish Polish partisans who had been sentenced to twenty-five years of hard labor for rebelling after Russia conquered Poland in WW2. While this was happening, the natchalnik (commander) of the camp walked by the arguing men and asked R’ Nachman what he was building, if he perhaps had forgotten that he was in a labor camp! B"H ‫ספורי‬ NACHMAN ROZMAN'S SUKKAH ‫חסידים‬ As told over by R’ Asher Sossonko A”H: Between the years 1950-1956, R’ Asher Sossonko was imprisoned in a Siberian labor camp. Surprisingly, these Polish ruffians took a liking to R’ Asher, since they valued the fact that he stood up to the Communist ideology and wouldn’t work on Shabbos and Yom Tov. Sentenced to twenty-five years in the labor camp, R’ Nachman had a change of heart and decided to go back to the truth of his childhood and begin keeping Torah and Mitzvos.
