The biblical word for freedom is actually חֹפֶשׁas it says: כִּי תִ קְ נֶה עֶ בֶד עִ בְרִ יShould you buy a Hebrew slave שֵׁשׁ שָׁ נִים יַעֲב ֹדhe shall work [for] six years וּבַ שְּׁ בִ עִתand in the seventh יֵצֵא לַ חָ פְ שִׁי חִ נָּםhe shall go out free without charge[2] Alternatively, another word that conveys the idea of freedom is דְּ רוֹר. The Ramban explains that the word דְּ רוֹרis an abbreviation for “ דֹּור הֹלְֵך וְדֹור בָּא- One generation goes, another comes” [2] Question: If the biblical words for freedom are חֹפֶשׁor דְּ רוֹר, why did our Sages designate the word חֵרוּתfor freedom? In Pirkei Avot, Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi encourages us to occupy ourselves with learning Torah, as he says: וְ הַ לֻּח ֹת מַ עֲ שֵׂה אֱֹלקִים הֵ מָּהAnd the Luchos (tablets) were the work of G-d וְ הַ מִּ כְתָּ ב מִ כְתַּ ב אֱֹלקִים הוּאand the writing was the writing of G-d חָרוּת עַל הַ לֻּח ֹתengraved upon the Luchos[3] ַאל תִּ קְרָ א חָרוּתDon’t read "engraved" ()חָרוּת אֶ לָּא חֵרוּתbut rather read it as "freedom" ()חֵרוּת שֶׁ אֵין לְָך בֶּן חוֹרִ יןFor there is no free individual, אֶ לָּא מִי שֶׁעוֹסֵק בְּתַ לְמוּד תּוֹרָ הExcept for one who works towards the study of Torah.[4] Three Levels of Freedom In his expansive 3 volume set on the Haggadah, entitled “Pathways to Pesach and the Haggadah”, R. Aquila answered: “A man can never fully understand the Torah if he remains uncircumcised, as it is said: מַ גִּיד דְּ בָרָ יו לְ יַעֲק ֹב חֻ קָּיו וּמִ שְׁ פָּ טָיו לְ יִשְׂרָ אֵל- He tells His words to Jacob, His statutes and His judgments to Israel.[6] That is, HaShem gives his words of Torah to one who is like Yaakov (the Jews), and is circumcised, but not to people who are uncircumcised.”[7] From this intriguing story, we can begin to understand that there is an intrinsic connection between the concept of removing something of the original matter, like engraving, and refining oneself in order to better understand Torah and become part of the Jewish people. We can then can see the fulfillment of “ ַׁשַּלח עִַּמי וְ יַעַ בְדֻ נִי- Let My people go, so they will serve Me.” This is the essential significance
