Bnei Yisrael are warned that if they fail to completely rid the Land of the Canaanites, those who remain will be “pins in their eyes and thorns in their sides.” The boundaries of the Land are defined; the tribes are commanded to set aside 48 cities for the Levites, who do not receive a regular portion in the division of the Land. COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS Birkat HaChama - The Blessing of the Sun (Part 4) by Rabbi Reuven Lauffer “I believe in the sun even when it is not shining.” Written on a cellar wall by an anonymous Jewish inmate in the Cologne Concentration Camp during the Holocaust Before Birkat HaChama is recited there is a custom to recite the first six verses from Tehillim 148: Praise Hashem! Sforno beautifully depicts how the praises sung in heaven flow down to our world to be gathered up by the spiritually aware who, in turn, add their own praises to this astonishingly poignant song, creating a harmony that blends together the physical and the spiritual dimensions. When commanding the sun to stop moving so that the Jewish People could battle against the five Amorite kings, Yehoshua says: “Sun, stand still at Givon, and Moon, in the Valley of Ayalon.” The very next verse attests to the fact that “the sun stood still and the moon stopped” just as Yehoshua had ordered. Rabbi Schneersohn explains why it was imperative that Yehoshua demand that the sun and the moon desist from their praises to Hashem: The spiritual forces generated by their songs of praise could have been “hijacked” by the enemy and harnessed for their own benefit, because they worshiped the sun and the moon. As the Sefat Emet beautifully portrays (Pesach 5734), “The letters of the prayers are sublime, and when they are enunciated as they should be, they sing out and return to their roots.” Rabbi Asher Perlow (1760–1826
