Statement: The Megillas Esther begins with the words of: ‫ וַ יְהִי ּבִימֵי אֲ חַ ׁשְ וֵרֹוׁש‬And it was in the days of Ahasuerus...” On these words, the Talmud says: There is a tradition that we received from the members of the Great Assembly that anywhere that the word “‫ וַ יְהִי‬- Vayhi” is written [in the Torah], it is a term indicating nothing other than impending misfortune.[1] Thus the word “‫ וַ יְהִי‬- Vayhi” can be understood as if the word were a contraction of the words “Vai” and “Hee”, meaning “woe it is.” In a similar fashion, the Midrash states: Rabbi Shmuel bar Nachman came and divided it, “Any place that “‫ וַ יְהִי‬- and it was” is written, then it is for misfortune. As the megillah states, “‫ וְרַ בִּים מֵ עַ מֵּי הָָארֶ ץ מִתְ יַהֲדִ ים‬- Many gentiles were converting…”[3] This is because when they looked back at everything that happened to both themselves and to the Jewish nation they saw how all the pieces fit together and recognized the many miracles. With these ideas, we can explain the Mishnah of, “‫ ֹלא יָצָא‬,ַ‫ הַּקֹורֵ א אֶת הַ ּמְ גִּלָה לְ מַ פְרֵ ע‬- if you read the Megillah backward, you have not fulfilled your obligation.” This hints to one who only recognizes Hashem's miracles ַ‫ לְ מַ פְרֵ ע‬- in retrospect. But if one holds onto their hopes and dreams of their past, continuously trusting in HaShem to have them fulfilled, then this type of perspective - especially when one is able to see the seemingly negative aspects of their past as a part of fulfilling a glorious future, this flipping of the past to the future becomes a sign of great joy and happiness.
