We Must Keep the Fire Burning During Bein Hazmanim Too אש תמיד תוקד על המזבח לא תכבה “Fire shall be kept continually on the mizbayach; it shall not go out.” (Vayikra 6:6) In the beginning of this week’s parsha, the Torah commands us to ensure that a permanent fire burns on the mizbayach, and adjures us to prevent it from being extinguished. The Chasam Sofer at the end of one of his Teshuvos (1:136) already writes: והיותי חוץ לחדר לימודי כי גרשוני נשים צדקניות המכבדים ליום טוב “ – של פסח על כן לא יכולתי להאריך ככל הצורךDue to the fact that I am not in the room I normally learn in, as the righteous women have kicked me out as they are busy preparing for Pesach, I can’t answer in as much length as I would like”. Tosfos asks: קשה דנהגו לכתוב בכתובה כסף זוזי “ – מאתן דחזי ליכי מדאורייתאThis is difficult, as the custom is to write on the keusbah, 200 silver zuz, which is deserving for you according to the Torah (which clearly sounds like the obligation to write a kesubah is de’O’raisa)?” Tosfos answers, that there are two types of kesubos, one which is given to women that have never been married before, and another type given to women that have previously been married. The Ramban (Kesubos 110b) and the Ran (65b) learn that since the obligation to write a kesubah is rabbinic in nature, if it is written in the keusbah: כסף “ – זוזי מאתן דחזי ליכי מדאורייתא200 silver zuz, which is deserving for you according to the Torah”, then the kesubah is pasul [disqualified].
