As Rabbeinu Bachya states, the Menorah’s seven branches of lights represent the seven areas of wisdom of the world.[7] This idea is also hinted at in Mishlei, “‫ חָ כְמֹות בָּ נְתָ ה בֵיתָ הּ‬- “Wisdom has built her house, ‫ חָ צְ בָה עַמּוּדֶ יהָ שִׁ בְ עָה‬- She has carved her seven pillars.”[8] The Chida and other Rishonim generally classify these 7 levels of wisdom as follows: 1) ‫ הִָּגיֹון‬- Logic (Grammar & Linguistics). 7) ‫ תּוֹרָ ה‬- The Knowledge of the Torah is represented by the middle branch, where all other wisdom stems.[9] Based on Noach’s blessing to his son Yefes of ‫ יַפְתְּ אֱֹלקִים לְ יֶפֶת‬- May G-d expand Yefes, ‫ וְ יִשְׁכּ ֹן בְָּאהֳ לֵי־שֵׁם‬- and may He dwell in the tents of Shem,”[10] (from whom the Greeks descended), our Sages understood that the Greeks possessed certain virtues worthy of Jewish respect. Answer: Concerning the lighting of the Chanukha menorah, Ashkenazim follow the Rambam, who was a Sefardic authority who says, “Every member of a household should light their own Menorah.” Sefardim observe this mitzvah following the view of Tosofos, who say, "Even if the household members were many, he should not light any additional Menorahs.” The Beir Haitev comments on this and says, “And this is a novelty, that Sefardim conduct themselves in accordance with Tosofos, and the Ashkenazim in accordance with the Rambam; a case that we do not find in any other instance.”[1] When Realities Collide: The Midrash tells us that the Greeks outlawed the performance of three core mitzvos of the Jewish people – Shabbos, Rosh Chodesh, and Bris Milah.[2] How were these three mitzvos so profoundly incompatible with Greek philosophy that they outlawed them?
