I was asked, that being that this year many people in Eretz Yisrael will be keeping one day Yom Tov for the first time, and for many people they will be celebrating Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah together in one day for the first time, to clarify some of the basic differences in what goes on in shul and around the home between Chutz La’aretz where Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah are split into two days, and here in Eretz Yisrael where it is celebrated all on one day. In Chutz La’aretz where Shemini Atzeres/Simchas Torah is over a two day span and the hakafos and finishing off the Torah happens on the second day, it has become widely accepted to refer to the 22 nd of Tishrei as Shemini Atzeres and the 23rd of Tishrei as Simchas Torah, however, in Eretz Yisrael where it is all on one day, we refer to the 22 nd of Tishrei as both Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah simultaneously. It is worthy of noting that in Chazal there isn’t really a name for a Yom Tov known as Simchas Torah, and in davening and bentching we make no mention of such a thing and both in Chutz La’aretz and in Eretz Yisrael we mention Shemini Atzeres in tefillah and not Simchas Torah. Furthermore, it is even forbidden to eat/sleep in the succah on Shemini Atzeres unless one makes some form of recognition that shows that the succah no longer maintains its holiness and mitzvah.1 For example, in Eretz Yisrael where erev Shemini Atzeres is Hoshanah Rabbah, one should remove a 4×4 tefach area of sechach from the roofing to show that he is
