In Devarim, however, we find two more words used to describe this mission. (Such was the case at the time of King Ahab whose nation was idolatrous, yet did not gossip about each other.) Therefore, Hashem called this place Nachal Eshcol, to remind us of the power and appreciation of Jewish Unity. Further, though only twelve men went, the verse says the cluster was cut by, “The Children of Israel.” As the representatives of the Jewish People, the spies were considered to act on behalf of them all. They were so large that the men could only carry one pomegranate or fig each, and the grapes had to be carried on a pole by two, four, or eight individuals, depending on various opinions of our Sages. The reason this place was named to recall the cluster the Jews took from there is because it could only be harvested and carried off by a group of them, working together. Playing with Fire – After the spies brought back their negative report, the Jews cried because they would not be able to enter the Promised Land and conquer it. It is a land whose very air makes one wise, and the opportunities to perform mitzvos there will last eternally, much longer than a brief, human lifespan. Instead, Hashem decreed they would indeed die in the wilderness and the children they said would die would instead be the ones to enter the Holy Land.
