I will arrange a new and beautiful menorah, and that is how we will properly thank Hashem for the kindness that He did to our ancestors.” ‘A simple Jew, who knew so little about Yiddishkeit, isn’t ready to do the mitzvah in the most basic fashion and only wants it to be done in the most beautiful way.’ R’ Asher thought to himself, impressed with R’ Nachman’s resolve and ashamed at the same time. However, I am certain that the Ba’al T’shuva, Nachman, who had such strength and Mesiras Nefesh, and was used to seeing miracles in the labor camp, was able to bring about the revelation of Eliyahu HaNavi.” לע"נ הרה"ת ר' יוסף יצחק ב"ר אשר ז"ל Before Chanukah arrived, R’ Asher told R’ Nachman the story of the miracles of Chanukah; how the Chasmonoim fought the Greeks with great Mesiras Nefesh, emerging victorious even though they were completely outnumbered. The prisoners all began clapping their hands, shouting to R’ Asher, “You are a holy man!” When telling this story, R’ Asher would always conclude as follows: “I am certain this officer was Eliyahu HaNavi. As the officer slowly approached, the two Jews remained standing by their menorah, silently begging Hashem for an open miracle like the one He performed during the time of Chanukah. (FIVE) חסידים As told by R’ Asher Sossonko A”H: During his time in a labor camp in Siberia, Russia, R’ Asher met another Jewish prisoner named R’ Nachman Rozman A"H. R’ Asher explained that it would be best to get small cans so the illegal menorah lighting in their barracks, which housed around 70 non-Jewish prisoners, would go unnoticed. R’ Asher and R’ Nachman set up the Menorah in a small washroom with a sink, which was on the side of the main barracks room, and lit the menorah every night without issue. In fact, many of the prisoners came to watch the two men make the brachos and light the candles, and R’ Asher explained the meaning of Chanukah to these curious gentiles. Usually headcounts were only done after curfew at 10:00 pm, to ensure all prisoners were in the barracks, and no-one could understand the reason behind this change.
