When the Torah tells us, "You should love your fellow as yourself" and concludes with the words "I am G-d" it is alluding that through Ahavas Yisrael — loving your fellow, one can attain Ahavas HaShem — love of G-d. This means that in order to best love others, we need to love ourselves, and yet to help cultivate self-compassion and love within ourselves, we need to demonstrate these attributes of love and compassion towards others.
