The Torah tells us: ּכִי יִׁשְאָלְָ בִנְָ מָחָר לֵאמֹר מָה הָעֵֹדת וְהַחֻּקִים וְהַּמִׁשְּפָטִים אֲׁשֶר צִּוָה ה' אֱֹלֵקינּו אֶתְכֶם- When your son asks you tomorrow, saying: "What are the testimonies, the statutes, and the laws that Hashem our G-d has commanded you?" (Devarim 6:20). Rashi notes: ּכִֽי־ יֵׁש מָחָר ׁשֶהּוא אַחַר זְמַן. יִׁשְאָֽלְָ בִנְָ מָחָר- there is a tomorrow which means ‘in the future.’ When, in the future, your son asks you about the laws of Pesach and the story of the Exodus, you must be prepared to enlighten, answer and educate him (Devarim 6:21-25). Rather, he requests of G-d: וְנָתַּתָ֨ לְעַבְּדְָ֜ לֵ֚ב ׁשֹמֵ֙עַ֙ לִׁשְּפֹ֣ט אֶֽת־עַּמְָ֔ לְהָבִ֖ין ּבֵֽין־טֹ֣וב לְָר֑ע- And You shall grant Your servant a listening heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and bad (Melachim I 3:9). The Mishnah teaches that one of the de ning characteristics of a wise person is: אֵינֹו מְַדּבֵר לִפְנֵי מִי ׁשֶּגָדֹול מִּמֶּנּו ּבְחָכְמָה- A wise person does not speak before one who is greater than he in wisdom (Avos 5:7). May we cultivate the humility to listen before we speak, the patience to grow before we judge, and the wisdom to recognize that every person can teach us something. And regarding the שאינו יודע לשאול- the child who does not know how to ask, the Torah instructs: ְָוְהִּגְַדּתָ לְבִנ, and you shall tell your son.
