E-mail DoItForDovid@gmail.com “And G‑d spoke to Moshe in the Wilderness of Sinai.” (Bamidbar 1:1) This week, we begin a new book of the Chumash, the book of Bamidbar, meaning wilderness or desert, known in English as Numbers, because it begins with a census of the Jewish People. It was Shmuel who identified Jerusalem and the Har HaBayis (Temple mount) as the location where Avraham bound Yitzchak on an altar as a sacrifice (before being stopped from slaughtering him by an angel) which should forever be the capital of the Jewish people. After the Shemona Esrai, we offer a whispered request that Hashem rebuild the Bais HaMikdash and give us, “our portion in Your Torah.” This is a recognition of the fact that each of us can have our own revelation; our personal Sinai, if you will. The tribes and flags were set up in a pattern that surrounded the Mishkan on four sides, representing the fact that wherever we are in the world, or in life, the Torah and service of Hashem are the hub of our reality. By persevering and facing the challenges with the faith that Hashem is on our side, we will be able to witness exceptional growth and use the pressure we’re under to launch us to great heights. The Ramban explains that since the exceptional increase of people was due to their enslavement, the tribe of Levi only increased in the natural way, thus totaling only twenty-two thousand. Rather, no matter where you are in the world; no matter where you are in life, these principles remain consistent and the values and behaviors you live by must remain solid as well.
