The Talmud mentions the following: 1) Earning a livelihood, as the Talmud says, “‫ קָ ׁשִין מְזֹונֹותָ יו ׁשֶל ָאדָ ם ּכִ קְרִ יעַת י ַם סּוף‬- A person’s livelihood is as difficult as the splitting the Yam Suf (Sea of Reeds).”[1] 2) Finding a shidduch (match), as the Talmud says, "‫ וְ קָ ׁשִין לְ זַּוְ גָן ּכִ קְרִ יעַת י ַם סּוף‬- It is as difficult to match a couple as the splitting of the Yam Suf (Sea of Reeds).”[2] Even the job of a Shadchan (matchmaker) is full of difficulties and challenges. When the time arrived for them to take leave he said, “Children, I beg of you, stay one day more with me; ‫ קָ שָׁה עָ לַי פְּרֵ דַ תְ כֶם‬your parting is hard for me!” If this was meant to describe the parting of the king and his children, Rashi should have used the expression “‫ פְּרֵ דַ תֵ ינוּ‬- Our parting is difficult.” But instead, Rashi uses the word “‫”פְּרֵ דַ תְ כֶם‬, which literally means “your parting.” But since HaShem never really leaves us, our Sages tell us that this idea hints at the following message: During the holidays in the month of Tishrei, the Jewish people are gathered together and unified as one. ‫ קָ שָׁה‬- Solidity When trying to understand the word ‫( קָ שָׁה‬difficult), we can see an alternative definition of this word in the pasuk: “‫ וְ עָ שִׂיתָ מְנ ַֹרת זָהָב טָהֹור‬- You shall make a Menorah of pure gold…‫ מִ קְשָׁ ה תֵּ עָ שֶׂה הַ מְּנֹורָ ה‬- the menorah shall be hammered”[16] Based on the word ‫( מִ קְ שָׁה‬hammered), Rashi explains that the menorah must be made from a solid single piece. The Sforno also explains the words: ‫ וְ זֶה מַ עֲ שֵׂה הַ מְּנ ָֹרה‬- Just as the menorah… was cast out of a single chunk of gold, something unified and solid - even though the menorah appears to be a multiplicity of lights, their function is also singular, one of unification,[17] So besides the meaning of being “hammered”, the word ‫ מִ קְ שָׁה‬can also have the meaning of something “solid.” So too. As it says, “‫ חֹומָה מִימִינָם וּמִ שְּׂמ ֹאלָם‬- (as a) wall from their right and from their left.”[18] Based on this, we can say that the phrase “‫ קָ שָׁה כִּ קְרִ יע
