He was told that those white marbles exist and even if, against all odds, he did pick sixty black marbles, now, after they have all been removed from the pouch, the odds have more than trebled that the next will be white. But now, after nearly two thousand years in exile, when one looks around at the state that our world is in and at our own, personal spiritual situation, it becomes very easy to despair of ever attaining a better future. And we are driven forward by the Rebbe’s own words, which he reiterated nearly every time that he spoke, that the time for our Redemption is imminent and that every good deed brings Moshiach closer. However, the Lubavitcher Rebbe tells us, if we take a moment to think it over, we will remember the proph- ets’ words of comfort to the Exiles that Moshiach will come in the end. In the beginning, right after we were told that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, it was not so hard to push through our troubles and keep on going. He throws it away, unflustered, and thrusts his hand back into the pouch; the odds are now greater that he’ll pick a white. He opens the drawstring with trembling fingers; he knows that his very life is, literally, in his hands. He calculates the odds in his head: almost thirteen-to-one in his favor; an overwhelming probability. Reinvigorated, he reaches into the bag and finally pulls out a white marble. Throughout our history, we Jews have been persecuted, again and again.
