B"H ‫ספורי‬ "ZHID PADACH - THE ‫חסידים‬ JEW EXPIRED" As told over by R’ Asher Sossonko A”H: Chassidim in Russia faced many hardships under the Communist regime just for being Jews, especially since they kept Torah and mitzvos. When she received a letter from R’ Asher stating that he was bored and he had lost his book and had nothing to read, she understood that he needed a new Siddur, so she would arrange to deliver one to him. Not having the greatest faith in the Russian post, she would travel herself to the closest town to his Siberian prison that non prisoners were allowed to go to and ship the Maztos from there. On Shvi’i Shel Pesach, as the prisoners were lining up for a count, R’ Asher who hadn’t eaten for almost eight days and had no more strength left, collapsed and fell to the ground. R’ Asher Sossonko A”H was one such chassid who was sentenced to ten long years of hard labor in Siberia for "religious crimes," but was released after "only" serving six. Often, the government would target a chassid and arrest him for crimes he never committed, sentencing him to years and years of prison - or worse R”L. These extreme measures gave enough time for the Matzos to arrive so that R’ Asher would be able to fulfill the Mitzvah and have what to eat on Pesach. He was not surprised to find that it was his Matzah, which the Russians had held until after Pesach, knowing that he would need it for the Yom Tov. Even though one may eat Chametz in a life threatening situation, R’ Asher would not eat anything other than some sugar and water that he had. While falling, he heard a non Jewish prisoner behind him telling his friend gleefully, “Zhid Padach” (the Jew expired).
