B"H ‫ספורי‬ R' NOCHUM SHMARYA SASONKIN & REBETZIN ‫חסידים‬ CHANA As told over by R’ Nochum Shmarya Sasonkin A”H (R’ Shmerel Batumer): In 1909, when R’ Shmerel was traveling home from Tomchei Tmimim for Rosh Hashanah, he made sure to stop in the city of Yekaterinoslav (Dnipropetrovsk). ‫לע"נ הרה"ת ר' יוסף יצחק ב"ר אשר ז"ל‬ B"H ‫ספורי‬ R' NOCHUM SHMARYA SASONKIN & REBETZIN ‫חסידים‬ CHANA Truly bothered that he had upset the Rebbetzin, R’ Shmerel desperately wanted to rectify the matter, and he finally got the opportunity to do so when he came to the United States for the wedding of his grandson, R’ Avrohom Sossonkin, in the summer of 1962. The Rebbe’s mother, the Rebbetzin Chana Z”L, opened the door when R’ Shmerel knocked, and he immediately asked the Rebbetzin, “Is Levik here?” In Lubavitch, honorific titles such as ‘Reb’ were not used; instead, Chassidim would show Kavod by calling a Chassid they honored simply by his name, and R’ Shmerel acted accordingly. When he arrived, R’ Shmerel saw the Rebbe’s mother say something quietly to the Rebbe, and he understood that the situation was not resolved like he had thought, and that Rebbetzin Chana was still upset that R’ Shmerel had called R’ Levi Yitzchok by his first name. The first was R’ Mendel Chein…” Before R’ Shmerel could finish his sentence, the Rebbe’s mother interjected and said, “the second one was my Levik.” R’ Shmerel nodded respectfully to the Rebbetzin and continued, “In Lubavitch we didn’t know of any titles, and these two Bochurim were called by their first names, Mendel and Levik. This was because the Gemara states, ‘Gadol M’Raban Shmoi,’ a person's name is greater than the title of ‘Raban.’ In the Gemara, the title of ‘Rav’ was given to the sages of Bavel, and in Eretz Yisroel a Yud was added for ‘Rabbi’ (because the letter ‘Yud’ connotes chochmah/wisdom, and the very air of Eretz Yisroel makes one wise). Still, when someone was so great and famous that, just by mentioning his name, all honorable attributes were automatically assumed, no titles were necessary, ‘Gadol M’Raban Shmoi.’ That is why, when we called these bochurim Levik and Mendel, it was already a given that all other titles like Tzadik, Chochom, Kadosh, etc., were included.” Rebbetzin Chana visibly enjoyed R’ Shmerel’s
