One of the Six Questions Asked After 120 The Gemara in Shabbos (31a) describes a scene that takes place posthumously: ‫אמר רבא בשעה שמכניסין אדם לדין אומרים לו נשאת ונתת באמונה קבעת עתים לתורה עסקת בפו''ר‬ .‫צפית לישועה פלפלת בחכמה הבנת דבר מתוך דבר ואפ''ה אי יראת ה' היא אוצרו אין אי לא לא‬ “Rava said: After departing from this world, when a person is brought to judgment for the life he lived in this world, they say to him…: “Did you conduct business faithfully? 2 Not Awaiting Moshiach The Rambam (Hilchos Melochim 11:1) denounces one who does not await the arrival of Moshiach: ‫וכל מי שאינו מאמין בו או מי שאינו מחכה לביאתו לא בשאר נביאים בלבד הוא כופר אלא בתורה ומשה‬ ‫רבינו שהרי תורה העידה עליו שנ' ושב ה' אלקיך את שבותך ורחמך ושב וקבצך מכל העמים וכו' אם‬ .‫יהיה נדחך בקצה השמים משם יקבצך ה' אלקיך ומשם יקחך והביאך ה' אלקיך‬ “Anyone who does not believe in him or does not await his coming, denies not only the statements of the other prophets, but those of the Torah and Moshe Rabbeinu. Even though there has already been a big delay, I nevertheless wait for him every day to come.” Belief in the Coming of Moshiach – and Awaiting Salvation The chiddushim attributed to the Ran (Shabbos 31a) quotes the Ba’alei HaTosfos who explain that when one is asked after 120, ‫“ – צפית לישועה‬Did you await salvation?”, he is not simply being asked: ‫“ – צפית שתבוא ישועה לישראל‬Did you wait for a salvation to come to Klal Yisroel”, as one who doesn’t await that is simply a heretic. The Gemara explains, that the reason for this takonah is: ‫משום שמהרה יבנה בהמ״ק ויאמרו אשתקד מי לא‬ ‫אכלנו בהאיר מזרח השתא נמי ניכול ואינהו לא ידעו דאישתקד דלא הוה בהמ״ ק האיר מזרח מתיר‬ ‫“ – השתא דאיכא בהמ״ ק עומר מתיר‬Because the Beis HaMikdosh will speedily be rebuilt (hopefully), and people will say, ‘la
