If it was only an expression of the master’s appreciation, what the master gives would be limited by how much he appreciated the ‫עבד‬. Further discussion: Which slave in the ‫ תורה‬was granted “‫ ”הענקה‬by Hashem, and by others who hadn’t either enslaved him? Rather, the master must give an abundance of gifts, so the ‫ עבד‬feels independent, self-reliant, and truly free. Why does the ‫ פסוק‬emphasize what Hashem did for ‫ בני ישראל‬after they were enslaved by the Egyptians? Similarly, ‫ בני ישראל‬should do the same, and ______ their ‫ עבד עברי‬gifts when he leaves.
