As always, the Rebbe was meticulous in his planning and instructed that the following five Chassidim go as the Lubavitcher delegation; R’ Pinchas Hirschprung A”H, then Chief Rabbi of Montreal, R’ Arye Leib Kramer A”H, head of the Yeshiva, R’ Yitzchok Hendel A”H, Rov of the Chabad community, R’ Aizik Schwei A”H, Rov and Rosh Yeshiva, and R’ Peretz Mochkin A”H, elder Chasid and Mashpia, as well as a personal friend of the Rubashov family. As R’ Peretz sang, Shazar's eyes filled with tears and he said, “Yes, yes, this is his Nigun!” The President of Israel and R’ Peretz, an old-time Chassid in clothes still dirty from his winemaking, got lost in conversation, going back in time and sharing memories of Shazar’s entire family. I am with my family right now, who needs them?!” At the end of the meeting, during which time only R’ Peretz and Shazar spoke, R’ Peretz said, “Nu, let us say a l'chaim, since we are both nothing until the Rebbe sends us on a mission.” Shazar agreed and R’ Peretz said, “R’ Zalman, you need to know that you are the Rebbe’s person and through you the Rebbe can accomplish very important things. ‫לע"נ הרה"ת ר' יוסף יצחק ב"ר אשר ז"ל‬ B"H ‫ספורי‬ “THE WAY HE IS ‫חסידים‬ STANDING AND GOING" When the Chassidim arrived at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel to meet with Shazar, R’ Aizik introduced all the illustrious (and cleanly dressed) Rabbonim gathered there, saving R’ Peretz for last. After listing which Chassidim should be part of the delegation, the Rebbe gave the (seemingly) strange instruction that the first four Chassidim listed should be notified of the trip in advance; however, the Rebbe specified that R’ Peretz should be picked up on the way to the meeting, as is, without changing anything. The Chassidim were very concerned that without advance notice R’ Peretz wouldn't be properly dressed (or clean enough) to meet with the President of Israel, but being the caliber of Chassid they each were, none of the members of delegation went against the Rebbe’s instructions.
