The concluding section states ‘For on this day [Hashem] will atone for you… before Hashem you will be purified.’ 2 A discourse by Rabbi Shneur Zalman, the first Chabad Rebbe, explains that the Hebrew word lifnei translated as ‘before’ can also mean, in the Kabbalistic way of seeing existence, ‘higher than’. An important prayer said every morning reads ‘My G-d, the Soul which You gave me is pure, You created it, You formed it, and You blew it into me..’ The terms ‘created, ‘formed’ indicate the prayer refers to levels of the spiritual realms: Creation, Formation. We see this from the verse ‘At the beginning Elokim created heaven and earth’3 The Tetragrammaton is higher than Elokim but it also has a relationship with existence, for it literally means ‘causes to exist’4. May Hashem grant that through discussing these matters we should come to fulfil the Mitzvot connected with the Land of Israel, such as the Mitzvot concerning the fruit of trees, with the coming of Moshiach. Hence there is a verse ‘on the day when Hashem [the Tetragrammaton] Elokim made earth and heaven’5 showing that both Elokim and the Tetragrammaton are involved in Creation. He adds that the concept of Teshuvah, Repentance – the theme of Yom Kippur - is to return the Divine Soul to its supernal source, higher than the downchaining of worlds. But it is explained by the second statement about Teshuvah meaning connecting the Soul with its source, beyond the downchaining of worlds. But then, through its service of the Divine, making the world into a dwelling for the Divine Essence, the Soul reconnects with its source.
