Eisikovits eisikovits1@gmail.com 2 Children Are A Gift Parshas Devarim By Rabbi Yissocher Frand Children are a Gift “May God, the Lord of your fathers, add a thousandfold more like you and bless you, as He spoke to you.” (Devarim 1:11) The Jewish people, Rashi informs us, were not very happy with the blessing Moshe gave them. Rashi, following the ideas of the Midrash, explains that the locations that were identified were not meant to be specific geographic localities, but, 5 rather, they were intended to highlight events that occurred to the Jewish people during their 40 years in the Sinai desert. We have a rule that while there is a myriad of interpretations to the eternal words and depth of the narrative verses as written in the Torah, the Talmud cautions us that while we should always be aware of what the Torah really means, the simple explanation of the words is also primary to our understanding of its values and message. “It is not necessary to continue translating” the minister interrupted, “I fully understand the message of the Rabbiner, even without translation.” Similarly, ninety years ago, the Polish government proposed a law that Jewish teachers would require official certification that they were fluent in the Polish language.
