In recent times a number of Teshuvos have been written addressing the question of whether the principle of belias keilim (‫ – )בליעת כלים‬that the taste of food cooked in a utensil remains in the utensil even after it has been cleaned, and will impact food subsequently cooked in the utensil – is applicable to modern day kitchenware. 2 Discolored Hag’ala Water The Ran (Chullin 44a, MiDafay HaRif) warns against kashering a large number of utensils in a single pot: .‫צריך ליזהר שלא להגעיל כלים יותר מדאי ביורה אחת עד שנשתנה צורת המים מחמת פליטת הכלים דהוה ליה מגעיל ברוטב‬ “One must ensure not to immerse too many utensils in the same pot such that the water’s appearance changes as a result of the [substances] expunged from the utensils, as he is then immersing in gravy [as opposed to water].” The Ran cautions that kashering a large number of utensils one after the other in the same pot of boiling water will eventually cause the water to change color, to the point where it loses its halachic identity as water suitable for hag’ala. In discussing the guidelines for kashering utensils for Pesach, the Machzor Vitri writes: ‫ ואין צריך‬,‫שוטפן ומדיחן יפה‬ ‫“ – לגוררן‬one must rinse the utensils thoroughly in preparation for hag’ala, but there is no need to scrape the residue stuck onto the utensils’ surface”. The Rema then adds that we may permit the oil even according to the position that we cannot rely on non-Jewish experts to make this determination, because: ‫“ – אנו בעצמנו טעמנו אותו כמה פעמים ולא טעמנו כלום‬we ourselves have tasted it on several occasions, and we tasted nothing in it.” Once it has been empirically determined that the quantity of forbidden food in a mixture is too small to impart taste, we may rely on this conclusion. 6 Ein Mevatlin Issur L’Chatchilah (‫)אין מבטלין איסור לכתחילה‬ As noted earlier, scientific data shows that modern-day utensils do, indeed, absorb a miniscule quantity of food, and then expunge it during subsequent use, but this amount is far too small to impart taste. The Ran (Pesochim 9a, MiDafay HaRif), articulating the vie
