This occurs in years whose siman is ‫הכז‬, which means that the year starts (Rosh Hashanah is) on a Thursday (‫)ה‬, the months of Cheshvan and Kislev are “normal” ( ּ‫—)כְ ּ סִ דְ ָרה‬i.e., Cheshvan has 29 days and Kislev 30—and the first day of Passover is on Shabbat (‫)ז‬. The Baal Shem Tov taught that the serpent strikes a person on his heel, symbolizing the termination of a good deed, as it says with respect to the curse given the snake in the Garden of Eden, “And you shall strike his [man’s] heel” 9 ( ‫וְאַ תּ ָ ה‬ ‫)תְּ ׁשו ּפֶ נּו ּ עקֵָ ב‬. 57-58) ‫וַתּ ֵ֤צֵ א אֵ שׁ ֙ מִ לִּ פְ ֵ ֣ני יְ הוָ֔ה וַתּ ֹ ֙אכַ ל֙ עַ ל־הַ מִּ זְבּ֔ ֵ חַ אֶ ת־הָ ע ָֹל֖ ה וְ אֶ ת־הַ חֲלָ בִ ֑ים וַ ַ ֤יּ ְרא כּ ָ ל־הָ עָ ם֙ וַ יָ ּ רֹ֔ נּ וּ ַ ֽויִ ּ ּפְ ל֖ וּ עַ ל־פּ ְ נֵיהֶ ֽ ם )ויקרא‬ (‫ כד‬,‫ט‬ “Fire came forth from before God and consumed the burnt offering and the fat parts on the altar. And all the people saw, and shouted, and fell on their faces.” (Leviticus 9:24) Third Reading: The Run and Return of Spiritual Experiences "Isaac shall laugh joyously" The Zohar opens its discussion of Parashat Shemini with the following, “And it came to pass on the eighth day.” Rabbi Isaac opened with, “When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy” 13 ( ‫בְ ּ ָרן יַחַ ד‬ ‫)כּ וֹכְ בֵי בֹקֶ ר וַי ּ ִָריעו ּ כָּל בְ ּ נֵי אֱ ־לֹהִ ים‬.
