The Torah is telling us that when a child is exposed to a “kol aviv” — “his father’s voice” — and a “kol imo” — “his mother’s voice” — each one telling the child different things, it is possible that the child, receiving mixed signals, may end up being wayward and rebellious. Rabbeinu Bachya elaborates and says that each person, when he is created, is shown the entirety of his life: How long he will live and when he will die, what events will happen to him, and even what his livelihood will be like, and the person gladly accepts his life. Slaughtering animals is fine as it serves a human need, however, we are commanded to perform shechita in a specific way which is most “humane.” Indeed, the idea of acting “humanely” is not because animals are people and people are animals, but because as people we are to act better than animals which simply act on instinct and self- interest. “If a man will have a wayward and rebellious son, who does not hearken to the voice of his father and to the voice of his mother.” (21:18) QUESTION: Why is the word “bekol” — “to the voice” — repeated? We who were blessed to be born Jewish, to have these commandments and practices that fill our lives with meaning, should take a lesson from this woman and grow to appreciate what we have. ANSWER: When a man and woman enter into marriage, it is extremely important that they have similar views and mutual goals for the family they hope to raise. The person is directed to make a fence, to show that he is concerned about others, but not to build a wall, because it will not protect anyone from falling if it is so ordained. These mitzvos teach us that Hashem does have mercy on His creatures – on Mankind, who cannot exist unless he learns how to be caring and considerate of the rest of his species. By putting a fence around his roof, the homeowner is showing that he does not want his property to be the cause of someone else’s downfall, even if it was destined to happen.
