According to Pnimiyus HaTorah , this structural anomaly is the foundation for the Tzemach Tzedek’s explanation8 that Pesach Sheini is inherently tied to the spiritual theme of Iyar 9, the “second month.” {To explain:} The Tzemach Tzedek explains that PesachSheini {represents a spiritual elevation} in a person’sAvodas Hashem (Divine service). As the Tanya explains11, the verse states 12 regarding the Exodus, “for the people had fled,” because “the evil in the souls of Israel was still in its strength.” Their primary service was fleeing the impurity of Egypt, {a classic model of} “turn away from evil.” Only after completing this prerequisite step were they elevated to thesecond level of “do good.” In the spiritual service of the soul, the first Pesach represents iskafya (subjugation) — suppressing the evil within. {This reflects the Sages’ interpretation of the command to love G -d:} “With all your heart — with both your inclinations.” 13 This virtue of Pesach Sheini perfectly aligns with the core theme of Iyar (the second month) in contrast to Nissan (the first month). Based on this, theTzemach Tzedek explains14 a key halachic distinction between the two offerings: “During the first [Pesach], it is forbidden [for chametz] to be seen or found, while during the second, chametz and matzah are with him in the house.”15 Because the service of the firstPesach is “turn away from evil” (fleeing the bad), we are obligated to eradicate the chametz. Seemingly, this explanation — that Pesach Sheini represents a second, elevated level in Divine service (“do good,” is’hapcha) which follows after the preparatory service of the firstPesach (“turn away from evil,” iskafya) — contradicts the straightforward meaning of Scripture (and Halachah).
