The reason is that during this time we are in mourning over the tragic loss of the 24,000 students of Rabbi Akiva who died in a plague.[1] As the Talmud says: ‫ׁשְ נֵים עָ ׂשָר ָאלֶף זּוגִים ּתַ לְ מִידִ ים‬ 12,000 pairs of students ‫הָיּו לֹו לְרַ ּבִי עֲ קִיבָא‬ were there to Rabbi Akiva ‫מִ ּגְבָת עַד ַאנְטִיפְרַ ס‬ from Gevat to Antiparis ‫וְכּוּלָן מֵתּו ּבְ פֶרֶ ק אֶ חָד‬ and they all died in one period .‫מִ ּפְ נֵי ׁשֶֹּלא נָהֲגּו ּכָבֹוד זֶה לָ זֶה‬ because they did not honor one another.[2] Questions: It is difficult to understand how the students of the famed Rabbi Akiva, who themselves were considered great Torah scholars, could have been deficient in their interpersonal relationships with their colleagues. After all, it was their teacher Rabbi Akiva who taught: “‫ וְָאהַ בְָּת לְרֵ עֲָך ָּכמֹוָך‬- Love your fellow as yourself…This is a great principle of the Torah.”![3] Furthermore, to be deemed worthy of the title “Talmid,” a student of a particular teacher should embody those very same principles that were taught, especially if this teaching was a ‫ ְּכ לָל ָּגדֹול ַּבּתֹורָ ה‬- a fundamental maxim. Love Upon closer examination, it is interesting to note that the Talmud doesn’t say Rabbi Akiva’s students didn’t love each other, but rather, “‫ ׁשֶֹּלא נָהֲגּו ּכָבֹוד ז ֶה לָ ז ֶה‬- they did not conduct honor to one another.” So is there a difference between honor and love? Love: With regard to ‫ ַאהֲ בָה‬- love, when the pasuk says, “‫ וְָאהַ בְתָּ לְרֵ עֲָך כָּמֹוָך‬- Love your fellow as yourself ” one develops a closeness with another based on those aspects that are “‫”כָּמֹוָך‬- those elements that each has in common with each other. The Alter Rebbe in Tanya relates that when one recognizes that all Jews share a G-dly soul and that this soul is an actual portion of HaShem above, one can come to love their fellow Jew to the point where the Maggid of Mezeritch says, “‫ וְָאהַ בְתָּ לְרֵ עֲָך כָּמֹוָך‬- means to love the utterly wicked just as one would love the perfectly righteous.”[11] However important this type of love may be, if used in isolation there is an inherent shortcoming and drawback.
